International Applicants
We offer specific support services and resources to help international applicants understand our application requirements, navigate immigration and connect with RISD's multicultural community.
Application requirements
All graduate application requirements are the same for international and domestic students. Some things to keep in mind:
- If your academic credentials are not written in English, they must be translated into English by an approved translator prior to submission.
- All applicants who speak English as a second language, including US citizens, must submit results from any one of these three options: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or Duolingo (an online English test).
International student support
ISSA supports and advocates for our international community by providing advice and guidance to prospective, incoming and current students and scholars, as well as those who have recently graduated or completed their work at RISD. ISSA guides our international students on a wide range of topics such as federal regulations and immigration compliance, including Form I-20 and F-1 visa instructions, as well as supporting your cultural transition to life at RISD.
The Center for Arts & Language offers peer tutoring, workshops, resources, and events supporting written, spoken and visual communication for all RISD students. They also run the Graduate Language Intensive, an optional 1-credit summer course that supports incoming multilingual and international students by providing a linguistic, cultural and academic foundation for advanced study in the US.
International applicants can seek financial aid through various programs including fellowships, assistantships, payments plans, international student aid and more. We're here to help you make the best use of all available resources to help meet the cost of RISD's extraordinary education.
