Emergencies, disasters and accidents can happen at any time and without warning. Even though we cannot always anticipate or prevent them, we can mitigate their effects through proper preparation and response.
The purpose of this site is to do just that—prepare our community for such events. We aim to educate students, staff, faculty and parents on the steps that RISD will take in the event of an emergency. This site can also educate our community on steps that they can take to ensure their own safety in an emergency of any size.
The Emergency Operations Command Team (EOCT) will ensure that RISD’s emergency management procedures are reviewed and tested on an ongoing basis.
While RISD has devoted considerable resources to planning and preparing for emergencies, we also encourage all students, faculty and staff to take responsibility for their own preparedness by knowing what to do before, during and after an emergency situation and taking the necessary precautions to maximize their safety.
If you have any questions about emergency management at RISD please feel free to contact the Risk & Emergency Management Office at 401 454-6497 or Public Safety at 401 454-6666 at any time.

RISDAlert system
In addition to the documents and tools found on this site, RISD subscribes to a mass notification system that is designed to alert our community in the event of a campus emergency. The RISDAlert emergency notification system uses email and text messaging to send time-sensitive information to students, faculty and staff members.
To ensure that you receive the information you need in the event of a campus emergency, we offer three notification methods:
Email notifications
All RISD email addresses (@risd.edu) are automatically enrolled in the system and will receive RISDAlerts.
SMS text message notifications
RISD students, faculty and staff must designate a cell phone number in Workday to receive text notifications. Here’s how to update your contact information in Workday.
Push notifications
RISD students, faculty and staff may download the RISD Mobile app from the Apple App Store or Google Play and enable push notifications.
RISDAlerts for the public
Anyone who does not have an @risd.edu email and wishes to receive RISDAlerts via text can opt in by texting “RISDALERT” to 226787. This shortcode subscription service is intended for families and members of the public.
The shortcode text alert service will remain active for 365 days. When the subscription expires, subscribers will receive a text inviting them to re-subscribe. You can stop at any time. Just reply “LEAVE RISDALERT”, or "STOP" to any RISDAlert text message.
Message and data rates may apply. Text messages are sent on an as-needed basis. This service is provided per the RAVE Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
