Angus Lockyer

Angus Lockyer is a historian who has taught Japanese, East Asian and global history in North Carolina and London, with a particular focus on urban history. His podcast, historicity, on the histories of London and Tokyo, is available on all platforms.

Lockyer has written about Japan’s experience of dragons, expos, golf and museums. His book, Exhibitionist Japan: The Spectacle of Development, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2025.

He has collaborated with colleagues at the British Museum on a number of projects, including the exhibition Hokusai: Beyond the Great Wave in 2017. He is now writing Japan: A History in Objects (forthcoming in 2026), based on the museum’s collection.
