Off-Campus Options

RISD connects students with a variety of options for enriching multicultural experiences beyond College Hill.

Many students choose to engage with Providence’s own diverse communities by volunteering to teach and help at various nonprofits throughout the city. RISD students are active in a range of programs, helping inner city youth through organizations such as AS220, Community MusicWorks, New Urban Arts, Project Open Door, Providence City Arts and Youth in Action, among many others. They work with people from other cultures through English for Action, Genesis Center, International Institute and Progreso Latino, and with the hungry and homeless through Amos House, Crossroads Rhode Island, Family Life Center and many other groups.

Further afield, students have a number of opportunities to live and learn in other countries throughout the world – through Wintersession Travel Study courses and various programs abroad. RISD’s own European Honors Program in Rome offers the opportunity to live and study in a city rich in art and architectural history. In addition, other relevant exchange programs are available at specialty schools throughout the world, from Australia to China, Finland, India, the Netherlands, Mexico, Peru and Switzerland, among many other destinations.
