The ten departments of the Fine Arts Division are committed to providing our students with exceptional artmaking, critical thinking, and professional practice skills that will prepare them to challenge conventional ideas, be agile in a fast-moving world, and nurture a life long passion for creative engagement. RISD has built its reputation for excellence on the strength of its disciplinary programs staffed by faculty who maintain active professional careers and represent a richly diverse ecosystem of philosophies and practices. While students select a major department to be their institutional “home,” there is considerable latitude in the curriculum for cross-disciplinary exploration and collaborative work with faculty mentoring.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of internship and international study opportunities under the supervision of their advisors. Recently, fine arts students have interned with Google, 38 Studios, MIT Gambit, Disney, Martha Stewart, Cartoon Network, Helmut Lang and the Museum of Modern Art, as well as assisting working artists, photographers, and designers in their studios. The value of a RISD education in the fine arts is underwritten by the highly motivated and exceptional students who come here, the generosity and dedication of our outstanding faculty of professional artists and technicians, the rich resources provided by RISD’s Museum of Art, Fleet Library and Nature Lab, and a life-long network of alumni and career services to support the aspirations of our graduates.
